Julia Adler was born in Duisburg, NRR, ADL to a well-off family. As a Gnome her childhood was full of trouble related to her diminutive size and fiery temper. Her Awakening at age thirteen gave her something to focus her energy on and combined with her towering natural intellect and her family money, she was able to pursue education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Thaumaturgy.
After finishing school she returned to Germany to work for Deutsche Erdölgesellschaft (a heavy industry subsidiary of Saeder-Krupp) as a thaumaturgical chemist, a discipline involving applying magical techniques to mundane fabrication processes. Her career was going well, until a corporate restructuring put her department under the thumb of a magiphobe and a racist. An argument over his lack of understanding of the work got very heated, and she turned her magic on him. Lucky for him, he lived.
Unable to remain with the company after magically assaulting a superior, she brought her talents to the Berlin shadow community. After some time in Berlin, she got a message from an old friend from MIT&T, Lance Shepard. He'd learned through his own shadow connections that she was no longer an "upstanding citizen" and offered her a slot on his Boston-based team.
After a brief time in Boston, a run gone bad lead to the dissolution of the team. Lance and his wife (also a member of the team) failed to notice a tail and lead the revenge-seeking opposition back to their home. In the ensuing fight, the couple's twelve year old daughter was killed. The rest of the team wasn't there quick enough to save the child, but Julia's magic was enough to save Lance and his wife. As a "parting gift", they offered her their daughter's SIN for saving them and as part of their cover for relocating.
Lance’s wife returned to her hometown in the CAS, Lance and Julia went to Seattle to get away from Boston and everything that had gone down.
