HUMURA Aoi is a disappointment to his father and himself. While his parents would have been happy with a doctor, engineer, or even a Marine like his father, Aoi squandered the constructive childhood they provided him and went into journalism. Unfortunately, it turned out that he was horribly ill-suited to the role, and the schooling they also paid for went wasted.
After drifting from job to job for a number of years, a cousin in Seattle presented him with an opportunity. Her employer, Renraku Computer Systems, had an open requisition for security officers. Figuring it was at least a step towards something that might satisfy his father, Aoi took the job.
He has been living and working in the SCIRE since it finished primary construction in 2054.

- Saori is married to a Renraku-employed engineer of Eastern European descent, hence the non-Japanese family name.
- His father is currently deployed to San Francisco as part Colonel Saito's occupation force.
