Mukami Hyland was born in the Ethiomalian Territories, though her father was a Wakayambi from Azania and her mother was European. Unknown to Mukami, her mother was one of the earliest shadowrunners and Ethomalia is home to a high-end, non-megacorporate-owned cyberclinics[1]. Her mother was receiving treatments for complications due to the combination of her extensive cybernetic enhancements and the pregnancy. It was only partially successful, as evidenced by Mukami's survival but her mother's death soon after her birth.
She was reared among her father's people, learning traditional wilderness and weapon skills along with exploring in her youth. In her teenage years, she was sent to school in Europe as her mother would have wanted. She developed an appreciation for both cultures, but never really found herself fitting properly in either. Discovering her adept abilities further emphasized the differences, the rituals of her father's people helped bring them out, but many of her talents were far more useful among her mother's people. It didn't help that her mentor spirit's distaste for dissembling and circumlocution made her appear even more socially awkward.
This pattern would follow her through her life. During university in Europe, she fell in love with (and eventually married) a man who would later be assigned to Mitsuhama Africa's corporate headquarters. Her own position, as an MCT financial analyst, lead to exploitation of the tribal population (though not her father's). Similar events would lead her to hate her tribal heritage and husband alike, eventually leading to a divorce.
Fortunately, her personal standing within the corporation itself allowed her to retain her corporate citizenship without her corporate-born husband. She has recently transferred to a North American branch, located in Seattle. She's hoping to start a new life, one that is neither African nor European in nature.
