Nian and Siri are identical twin sisters, daughters of divorced couple — a French politician and a Renraku executive. The divorce was anything but amicable, the result of Robin having an affair while on a trip to the home office in Japan and impregnating a Japanese woman when the twins were barely two.
They spent their entire childhood swapping back and forth between multiple households. Their mother maintained a large home in the south of France, surrounding them with nannies and servants to tend to their every need, while she held them at arm's length. For her, it was more about control and possession rather than any actual love for her daughters.
Before they were born, their father spent a lot of time travelling for work (another factor that lead to his divorce from their mother). Once he had three daughters to raise, he quickly worked his way into a more stable position. The less prestigious position suited his Renraku overlords' stance regarding fathering children on unwed women.
Since 2058 (age 15), they have lived with their father full-time. His business unit was moved into the SCIRE and he moved there along with it, bringing the twins with him. Their red hair made them stand out among the heavy Japanese population, and it took some time to adapt their European fencing to the more popular Kendo, but all in all, they had only minor trouble integrating into their new environment.
When the shutdown began, their father was outside the arcology, taking their half-sister to visit her family in Japan. They were among the students who were deceived by the Banded, lead to believe that there was a quarantine situation that required them to be sequestered in the University section.
