Saffron is the daughter of a school teacher and a traitor. She grew up believing her father was a war hero, killed in action defending the Confederation of American States against Aztlan aggression in 2035, when she was 5. The truth was somewhat different, but she wouldn't learn that until nearly two decades later.

While she was a metahuman child in the early days of the CAS, her father's status as a KIA CAS soldier and her mother's position as a teacher and later administrator in the Greater Atlanta school district isolated her from much of the cruelty and racism of her homeland. That protected and somewhat delusional upbringing lead her to choosing a career that would allow her to help others — nursing.

College

Once she was on her own at university, that illusion was pretty much shattered. It seemed like everything was made harder — they provided no accommodations for her stature, and metaracist behaviors of students, staff, and educators went unpunished. Her natural mental toughness and the comradery of her fellow metahuman students kept her going until an incident during her third year (age 21).

During the release event of Euphoria's Final Fling, she was attacked in the on-campus store by a fellow student after purchasing the last special edition copy in the store. By the time campus police arrived, he had stabbed her over a dozen times in the shoulders, neck, and face — including damaging both of her eyes.

During the discovery phase of the ensuing lawsuit, it was revealed that her attacker had a history of anti-metahuman violence targeting women which was covered up by the university due to a relative in the administration. Saffron won a substantial injury claim against him and the university, including coverage for all her medical expenses, reimbursement of three years of tuition, and a guarantee of the university's assistance in fully transferring her credits to another institution of her choice. After recovery, Saffron finished her nursing degree in the UCAS, at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Career

A few years into her career as an obstetrics nurse, she had another significant shock in her life when she recognized the grandfather of one of her patients, her (apparently not) deceased father. Despite not having seen him since she was a small child, she recognized him almost immediately. When she confronted him, he didn't even try to hide. She learned that he'd faked his own death after a military investigation was getting close to discovering his war profiteering. He took his ill-gotten gains and set himself up in Aztlan as a weapon's broker, where he eventually married and started a new family. They'd left Aztlan and moved to Seattle about a decade ago.

Saffron couldn't bring herself to hold it over his head, blackmailing him for treason and faking his own death just wasn't in her nature. She also wasn't inclined to deprive a new mother of any part of her support structure, so she did nothing. To date, she hasn't even told her mother, knowing it would break her heart.

Currently, Saffron is among those who were caught in the SCIRE during the shutdown. She was attending a holiday get-together with a number of other coworkers in at a club when it all went down.

Quirk

Her father's death, the attack in college, and rediscovering her father where only the largest of various events in her life the seem to fall in the middle of May, which is also when she was born. She's taken to hating her birthday and attempting to avoid all interactions on it. She doesn't celebrate it and always attempts to take it off from work so she can just stay home and avoid doing anything that might tempt the fates.
