<!--You search the Matrix for information about a topic.
The time it takes and the threshold of the test depend
on the general availability of the information in question and the area being searched, respectively. Any hits
above and beyond the threshold can be used to reduce
the search time. Divide the base time by the net hits to
determine the reduction. If you fail this test, you still
spend the full base time looking.
Some information is protected and kept secret,
stored in a host that is not publicly accessible. Finding
this information usually requires you to find and enter
the hosts in which the data is hidden. You can then make
a Matrix Search within the host, using a base time of
1 minute (regardless of the kind of information you’relooking for). This only works if the information is at
least occasionally accessed by the legitimate users of
the host. If the information is archived, you’ll need to
dig deeper into the host for that information, a dangerous process that is detailed in the forthcoming Matrix
sourcebook.-->

This article is work in progress for an attempt to replace the depth-first mechanical choice in the core Matrix Search in Shadowrun Fifth Edition Core Rulebook (p. 241).

The matrix is filled with thousands upon thousands of information sources covering a vast range of topics over many different levels of access ranging from broadcast media, to social media, to public information sites, to deep, dark hosts. All of it is available to a dedicated matrix specialist, or at least pointers towards the good stuff.

Sorting through all the cruft to find the useful data requires an Extended Matrix + Intuition [Data Processing] Test. The Threshold is determined by how obscure or well protected the data is, while the interval operates on a sliding scale.

Extended Test Intervals[1]
TaskTime
Interval
Fast1 Combat Turn
Quick1 minute
Short10 minutes
Average30 minutes
Long1 hour
Consuming1 day
Exhaustive1 week
Mammoth1 month

Instead of a consistent interval, it starts at 1 minute and advances one step on the Extended Test Intervals Table for each roll.

If the information is only available on a private matrix host, rather than providing the exact information, a successful Matrix Search provides the host where the information can be found.
