Pilot Programs[2] of Rating 3 and 4 are high-end but not "security" grade — they are Legal, not Restricted. A Pilot R:4 combined with an Driving Autosoft R:4 means a drone operating in autonomous mode can use Buying Hits[3] to get two hits, which accomplishes most Average Difficulty Tests[3].
Commensurately, Rating 5 and 6 become the "security grade" options and are Restricted instead of Forbidden. Superior military-grade pilot software (Rating 7 and 8) exists and is both Forbidden and expensive.
Keep in mind that the Rating of the Pilot program sets the Rating of the drone as a whole, which includes it's Device Rating. Device Rating is pretty trivial to identify via Matrix Perception[4], so running a military-grade Pilot is a great way to get your drone blown to pieces by law enforcement, no questions asked. After all, such a drone should be participating in a military or corporate operation, and the local police contractor are usually informed when such things are taking place.
Autosofts
With the adjustments to Active Skills, Autosofts[5] need to change too. With a few exceptions, Autosofts cover an entire group from the Skill Chart. They provide the drone every skill in the group equal to the Autosoft's Rating.
The processing capabilities of a drone brain are still somewhat limited. A drone running a number of onboard Autosofts equal to half its Device Rating, rounded up, can benefit from the full rating of those Autosofts. Alternatively, a drone can run a number of onboard Autosofts equal to it's full Device Rating, but no single Autosoft Rating can exceed it's Device Rating. The rules for Remote Control Consoles[6] remain unchanged.
Cost and Availability are as per Shadowrun Fifth Edition Core Rulebook (p. 442), but some autosofts are restricted or forbidden:
- Legal — Biotechnology, Computers, Driving, Engineering, Outdoors
- Restricted — Close Combat, Firearms, Projectile Weapons, Stealth
- Forbidden — Military Science
There is no autosoft for the Prowess group, as drones use Driving Tests for related tasks. There are also no autosofts for any Social, Magical, or Resonance Skills.
