Mr. Gold is one of the unlucky whose identity was lost in the Crash of 2029, or more specifically, his mother's identity was lost — Arthur wasn't even two weeks old at the time. As goes for the times, there's no record of his birth parents or what happened to them. The inability to do background checks in the aftermath of the Crash led to him being raised in Roman Catholic orphanage outside of Minneapolis.
