Born human in Japan, Keirin was osozaki — a late bloomer — undergoing Goblinization and becoming an ork at age 8. While quite common during the initial decades of the Awakening, by the 2040s it was exponentially less common; by then, metahuman variations were mostly identified in utero. Fortunately, her father's position within Renraku allowed him swift and regular access to the surgeries that would conceal her shameful nature.
In 2054 (age 12), just after her youngest sister (an unplanned pregnancy) was born an ork, her mother moved her and both her sisters to the SCIRE in Seattle, while her father and older brother remained in Japan. At the time, it was explained a promotion in her mother's parabotany career. When she was older, she learned the truth — her mother divorced her father and left Japan for a position in the more meta-tolerant Renraku America division to protect her baby sister from the same surgeries she was forced to undergo.
