Born human in Japan, Keirin was osozaki — a late bloomer — undergoing Goblinization and becoming an ork at age 8. While quite common during the initial decades of the Awakening, by the 2040s it was exponentially less common; by then, metahuman variations were mostly identified in utero. Fortunately, her father's position within Renraku allowed him swift and regular access to the surgeries that would conceal her shameful nature.
In 2053 (age 11), just after her youngest sister (an unplanned pregnancy) was born an ork, her mother moved her and both her sisters to the SCIRE in Seattle, while her father and older brother remained in Japan. At the time, it was explained a promotion in her mother's parabotany career. When she was older, she learned the truth — her mother divorced her father and left Japan for a position in the more meta-tolerant Renraku America division to protect her baby sister from the same surgeries she was forced to undergo.
While those surgeries dramatically reduced Keirin's visible ork traits — she has rounded ears, regular teeth, and human bone structure — they had little effect on other aspects of her growth. She reached her full adult height of 183 cm (6 ft 0 in) and had an adult's figure by thirteen. This led people who were unaware of her actual age to take her more seriously, and some people who did know her actual age and maturity level to take advantage. Speaking of teeth, it was her dentist that took advantage for a number of years. When her mother found out, she put a stop to it, but Keirin still harbors a distrust of medical professionals to this day.
Scheduled to graduate from high school in 2060, Keirin was working a coffee stand in the Mall when the Shutdown began. Along with SANKAI Ikito and URUSAI Mimi, she managed to escape the civilian round up. They spent the first night hiding out in the mall, before attempting to escape through the garage but being stymied by Blue Banded guards. They were forced back into the Mall, and eventually travelled higher, taking refuge and gathering supplies in the Hydroponic Garden on Level 21. That's where they met up with the shadowrunners and became part of The Resistance.
