URUSAI Mimi was not born into her Renraku SIN. Her birth parents were among the founding members of the Universal Brotherhood chapter. When they became Invae, they had no interest or knowledge of their newborn. A neighbor brought the child to the attention of the government, and she entered the foster system. Fortunately, infants are highly favored for adoption and she was swiftly taken in by a Renraku couple who wanted another child (instead of becoming empty nesters) but had trouble conceiving.
When it was discovered she'd been born deaf, her corporate parents arranged the best treatment and compensatory training available. Unfortunately, the condition is neurological rather than strictly physical, so prosthetic and cybernetic options are unavailable. It is fortunate that was discovered early, as a severe (but treatable) reaction to her datajack implantation would later reveal she was ill-suited to cybernetics of any kind. Despite that training, Mimi demonstrates a terrible fear of the dark — when she can't see, she feels disconnected from the entire world.
Mimi spent her childhood somewhat isolated, though not by choice. In addition to her disability, she was wickedly smart. She skipped multiple grades, leaving her smaller and smarter than all of her "peers." An invitation to study architecture at the incomplete Renraku University in 2057 (age 14) became the primary motivation for her parents seeking reassignment to the SCIRE. (Her adoptive siblings were all over the world in various Renraku posistions by this point.)
Along with SANKAI Ikito and YASUDA Keirin, she managed to escape the civilian round up. They spent the first night hiding out in the mall, before attempting to escape through the garage but being stymied by Blue Banded guards. They were forced back into the Mall, and eventually travelled higher, taking refuge and gathering supplies in the Hydroponic Garden on Level 21. That's where they met up with the shadowrunners and became part of The Resistance.
Mimi's Cat Ears
Mimi wears a custom headset fitted with cat ears on the band. They include a set of directional microphones of her own design, mated to a processor running custom software (also of her own making). While she cannot hear, the onboard expert system identifies and locates sounds, providing her with a visual indicator of what the sound is and where it is coming. Her original version integrated lenses and an imagelink to provide the AR interface, while the current iteration uses DNI. The current configuration only detects sounds within her field of vision, primarily a software limitation she is working to eliminate.
